This is a picture of Robert Owen. He was first involved in the Mill business in Manchester. At the age of 20 he was in charge of a workforce of 500. He came up to New Lanark in 1798 and the following year he married David Dale`s daughter Caroline.

It was not long before Robert Owen took over New Lanark and he ran it for twenty five years prior to the Walker family taking the Mills over. Unfortunately for Robert Owen the 1820`s were a very difficult time and that ultimately involved him in financial difficulties.
