This is a view of Crawford Castle out of Volume III of Irving and Murray`s History of the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire. This volume is a sort of catch up volume of Irving and Murray. Not so many people have this volume. It was published in 1864.
Crawford Castle is thought to be built on a 12th century motte. However as no excavation has taken place here, this is difficult to prove. There is however a report from Treasure Trove a number of years ago of a hoard of 12th century coins being found near Crawford. The Castle one sees today was built between the 15th/17th centuries.
